Consumers Cooperative Association Announces Winners of $80,000 in Scholarships

“Consumers Cooperative Association is excited to announce our 33 scholarship winners,” according to Kathleen Crews, CCA Chairman. “We are thrilled to award these scholarships to support students' working towards their educational and career goals. Encouraging the pursuit of higher education is the primary driver of our scholarship program. We’re confident these students will achieve their dreams and ultimately become the leaders of tomorrow.”

I am a graduate of the class of 2023 and looking forward to attending the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor to major in Mechanical Engineering. I'd like to design systems that help the world have an easier life. I would also like to thank my school's great teachers and counselors. I wouldn't be where I am today without any of them. Of course, I also thank the CCA for the help you provide to me.

Often, I feel we can easily be placed in a box and go through the motions of science and math without truly discovering what makes a world-class engineer in this current society. The world is not looking for people who can crunch numbers; engineers are the ones that are working with teams and all others around them to use their amazing human intellect to create something beautiful for this world. To strive to be a leader as an engineer and to advance our technology more than ever is what I believe is the greatest way I can use a career to provide service and love to others.

I went back to school for nursing because of the birth of my twin daughters. They were (7) weeks premature and needed to stay in the neonatal intensive unit (NICU). The nurses that cared for our daughters were compassionate, understanding, and knowledgeable. The nurses and my daughters inspired me to pursue a bachelor’s degree in nursing. My career goal is to become a NICU nurse.

Major: Fire and Emergency Medical Services

College/University: Northern Virgina Community College

I intend to pursue an associate degree in generalized health; while pursuing my associate degree, I plan to continue volunteering for my local fire and rescue department and enroll in the upcoming fire school to become a Firefighter/EMT. Along with working on my associate degree, I intend to pursue my paramedic degree to become a volunteer firefighter/medic. This will be a lot of work and challenging. But in the long run, it will be worth it to see someone go to a higher level of care and turn someone's bad day into a good one. Long-term, I want to get a degree in emergency management and work for the federal government.

I plan on getting a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering. I would love to specialize in architecture or construction and become a leader in improving infrastructure. My absolute dream would be to design and build a large construction piece like a bridge, high-rise, or dam. The possibilities are endless, whether building highways, finding cleaner waterways, designing a skyscraper, or planning a high-speed train route. I cannot wait to see what I am capable of doing.
